Public health officials in Iowa are reminding residents to take precautions against mosquitoes and ticks as the weather warms this spring and summer.
Iowa Department of Public Health veterinarian Ann Garvey said Monday that "prevention is the key to protection." Garvey says using preventive measures and greatly reduce risks of contracting the West Nile virus or Lyme disease.
The department offers tips, such as using insect repellent, replacing or repairing worn window screens and checking yourself, children and pets for ticks after being outside. Experts say prime mosquito-biting hours are between dusk and dawn.
