How a local-option tax vote recount would work

CEDAR RAPIDS - Iowa's recount procedure for public measure votes like Tuesday's Linn County local-option sales tax extension referendum goes like this:
According to Linn County Auditor Joel Miller, a recount will be held if a petition is filed with signatures equal to 1 percent of ballots cast in the election. In this case, that would be 319.
The petitioning party would designate one recount official, and Miller would appoint a second. Those two would then meet within a week to name the third official to conduct the recount.
There's no requirement to post a bond, nor an automatic recount provision, Miller said.
Supporters of We Can Do Better CR gather celebrate a narrow victory as the last of the results of Tuesday's local option sales tax vote on Tuesday, May 3, 2011 at the Starlight Room in Cedar Rapids. We Can Do Better CR oppose the extension of the LOST in Linn County. (Cliff Jette/SourceMedia Group)
