More than 50 percent of Iowans age 12 and older are fully vaccinated

More than half of Iowans age 12 and older have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19, according to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health.

As of 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, 1,380,842 Iowans had been fully vaccinated, an increase of 4,199 from Monday. That’s 51.6 percent of Iowans age 12 and older, and 43,77 percent of the state’s total population.

The number of people who have been fully vaccinated within the state, non-Iowans included, was 1,435,317.

The state reported 1,317,561 people have completed the Moderna or Pfizer two-shot regimen, while 117,756 people have received the single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

The total number of doses administered in the state as of Tuesday afternoon was 2,877,174.

In Linn County, 112,920 people have been fully vaccinated. That’s 49.81 percent of the county’s total population.

In Johnson County, 84,057 people — or 55.62 percent of the county’s population — have been fully vaccinated.

Confirmed deaths

The state reported one new, confirmed COVID-19 death in Pottawattamie County as of 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The person died May 26 and was between the ages of 61 and 80.

To date, 6,103 people in Iowa have died as a result of COVID-19.

New cases

State data on new cases was not updated as of Tuesday afternoon. As of 11:30 a.m. Monday, the total number of people who had tested positive for COVID-19 in Iowa was 372,637.

Hospitalizations

Across the state, the number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 in the 24-hour period ending Tuesday morning increased from 81 to 86.

Twenty-three patients were being treated in intensive care units Tuesday, an increase of three from the day before. The number of patients on ventilators to help them breathe ticked up from eight to 10.

Long-term care facilities

Three long-term care facilities in Iowa continue to have COVID-19 outbreaks. Within those facilities, 25 people are sick.

An outbreak is considered three or more cases among a facility’s residents and staff.

To date, 2,369 people in these facilities have died as the result of COVID-19, accounting for nearly 39 percent of the state’s death toll.
