A researcher at Iowa State University says he's studying pothole prevention.
Professor Chris Williams says he's adding recycled shingles and other materials to asphalt as an experiment. Williams says the fibers create added strength in the asphalt.
This summer Williams says he wants to work with asphalt made from corn stalks and switch grass.
The professor says the efforts are environmentally friendly and cost effective. He says so far he's seen improved performance.
Williams also says he's working with climatologists and looking for materials that can resist freezing and thawing.
