CROSS COUNTRY: Benton Community Girls Take 1st

By Mary Horst/Community contributorThe 16 teams of the Wamac conference met Thursday evening at Jones County Central Park in Anamosa for the conference cross country meet. Competing were Anamosa, Benton Community, Center Point-Urbana, Clear-Creek Amana, Dewitt Central, Dyersville Beckman, Independence, Maquoketa, Marion, Mount Vernon-Lisbon, Solon, Vinton-Shellsburg, Waterloo-Columbus, Williamsburg, West Delaware and Western Dubuque.Benton Community Girls edged out a tough field of competition taking first place with a team score of 59. Solon and Williamsburg finished second and third, scoring 63 and 65, respectively.Madison Weekly led the Benton Bobcats with a third place finish and time of 16:22, behind Lauren Benzing of Solon (15:31) and Alex Wilson of Mount Vernon-Lisbon (16:14).In the boys race, fourth-ranked Central Clinton Dewitt beat the top ranked Marion team with a team score of 48 to win the meet. Marion scored 58 and Solon 92 to round out the top three. Connor Smock of Mount Vernon-Lisbon took first place with a time of 16:34. Lukas Mees ran 17:15 for second and Pryor Stroud of Mount Vernon-Lisbon took third place with a time of 17:31.
