Week 7 -- Badger maul
Marc Morehouse
Oct. 17, 2009 1:47 pm
Totally different Iowa team came out of the lockerroom. Basically, they went into the lockerroom as Erkel from "Family Matters" and came out Rambo.
Iowa was beaten on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Wisconsin RB John Clay had 70 yards. UW quarterback Scott Tolzien was nearly perfect with 8 of 10 for 83 yards. But the bottomline read, 10-3 Badgers. The Hawkeyes were still in it.
It didn't look they were, but they were.
QB Ricky Stanzi tied it with a 24-yard TD pass to tight end Tony Moeaki with 7:58 left in the third quarter, tying the game 10-10. Then, Stanzi went 4 of 4 for 61 yards on a drive that was capped by running back Adam Robinson's 10-yard TD run for a 17-10 lead the Hawkeyes (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten) wouldn't give up.
The Hawkeyes are now 7-0 for the first time since 1985. The Badgers fell to 5-2, 2-2.
The Hawkeyes put the game away with 5:17 left. Kicker Daniel Murray booted a career-long 48-yard field goal for a 20-10 lead.
On the Badgers' next drive, outside linebacker A.J. Edds intercepted Tolzien -- Tolzien's second interception -- and the Hawkeyes ran out the rest of the game.
Stanzi, who was 11 of 13 in the second half, finished 17 of 23 for 218 yards and the TD to Moeaki. No interceptions. Derrell Johnson-Koulianos caught eight passes for 113 yards, including a 21-yarder where he was knocked out of bounds and came back in to make the grab and set up, eventually, Robinson's 10-yard TD run.
Clay was slowed with an ankle injury in the first half and managed just 5 rushing yards until late into the fourth quarter. Tolzien's first interception was to CB Amari Spievey. The Hawkeyes turned that into the Moeaki TD.
And, as I write this, Spievey finishes it off with his second pick qith 1:29 left. He baited the throw and picked off Tolzien for the third time.
Iowa travels to Michigan State (4-3, 3-1). I gave MSU the win over Northwestern. The Spartans 24-14 with nine minutes left.
