CEDAR RAPIDS JEFFERSON (15-8) vs. ANKENY (23-0)When: 3:30 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: It's an understatement to call this a tall task for eight-seeded J-Hawks. Ankeny is top-ranked and top-seeded and features 6-foot-9 junior center Ted Friedman (10.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg). The Hawks are a balanced team with five guys averaging 8.8 points or more, including top scorer Cole Myers (11.6 ppg). His twin brother, Corey, also is a key member of the team. Jefferson must shoot it as well as it did in a substate final overtime upset of Cedar Falls (13 of 19 3-pointers). Senior guard Taylor Olson (18.7 ppg) has had a wonderful senior season, developing into a Divison I college recruit. This is the third consecutive trip to state for Coach Stu Ordman and the J-Hawks. They've lost in the quarterfinals the previous two years.
When: 6:35 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: This is the ninth straight trip to state for Linn-Mar, while Senior is in Des Moines for the first time since 1979. Linn-Mar is the defending 4A champ and hasn't lost a quarterfinal during its record-setting run. These teams played in the regular season, with Linn-Mar winning, 62-55. A big question here is what can Marcus Paige do for an encore? The North Carolina signee had an amazing 49-point game against Cedar Rapids Kennedy in a double-overtime thriller in their substate final. He leads the state in scoring (28.5 ppg) and needs 60 points to become the Metro's all-time leading scorer (surpassing former Linn-Mar guard Jason Bohannon). This will be a great experience for Senior, which is dominated by underclassmen and should be one of the state's best 4A teams next season. 6-foot-5 forward Josh Weeber leads the Rams in scoring (15.0 ppg) and could be a load for Linn-Mar to handle.
When: 8:15 p.m.
Where: Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines
Scouting Report: Most "experts" are predicting an Ankeny-West final, so we'll see how the No. 2 Trojans come out of the gate here in a rematch of last year's state tourney quarterfinals. West won that game, 57-47, en route to a fourth-place finish. The Trojans are certainly favored here, behind their big three of Dondre Alexander (15.7 ppg), Jeremy Morgan (14.7 ppg) and Wyatt Lohaus (12.0 ppg). Morgan and Lohaus, of course, are sons of former Iowa Hawkeyes players. Senior guard Chad Gutschenritter has a hard name to pronounce and spell, but he's a ballplayer, leading Waukee in scoring at 13.7 points per game. For context, Waukee played on Mississippi Valley Conference team in the regular season, losing to Linn-Mar in a season opener, 53-48.
