Iowa reports 55 new COVID-19 cases and three confirmed deaths

Iowa reported 55 new COVID-19 cases as of noon Sunday, according to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health and analyzed by The Gazette.

Iowa also confirmed three new deaths statewide, all over the age of 80.

The new numbers raise the state’s case total to 372,571 and the death toll to 6,102.

The seven-day average for new cases is 79, and the seven-day average for deaths is four.

Seven new cases were reported in Linn County, while no cases were reported in Johnson County. Linn County’s total of cases rose to 21,180. Johnson’s total remains at 14,607.

Of the new cases reported Sunday, 10 were for children up to 17 years old, bringing the total for that age group to 44,725.

Confirmed deaths

Of the new deaths reported, two occurred in May, while one took place in June. Cass, Delaware and Scott counties each reported one death.

Vaccinations

As of 1:30 p.m. Sunday, 43.54 percent of all Iowans, or 1,373,721 individuals, have been fully vaccinated. A total of 1,310, 834 people have received both doses of a two-dose Pfizer BioNTech or Moderna vaccine, while 117,110 have received the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

In Linn County, 112,270 people have been fully vaccinated. In Johnson County, 83,638 people have been fully vaccinated. Those numbers account for 43.54 percent of Linn’s population and 55.34 percent of Johnson’s population.

Hospitalizations

The number of hospitalizations statewide increased by one during the 24-hour period, bringing the total of hospitalizations related to COVID-19 to 82.

Eighteen patients are in intensive care, compared with 19 the day before, while eight patients are on ventilators to assist with breathing, up from seven the day before.

Long-term care facilities

The number of outbreaks at long-term care facilities remains at four, with 31 people — residents and staff members — testing positive for the coronavirus.
