Clean up: The O-line (with Bulaga video)

The shot above is the one where UNI DT Chuck Kinney got a hold of guard Dan Doering's right arm, pushed it away and darted past the Iowa senior. Iowa QB Ricky Stanzi started running for his life, stumbled and eventually fumbled. UNI recovered and eventually kicked a field goal.
The Panthers racked up four first-half sacks last Saturday. Sack No.2 was Stanzi holding on to the ball too long on a bootleg. No. 3 was UNI DT Wes Lane beating Iowa guard Adam Gettis. The final one was a combo. Kinney stunted down on center Rafael Eubanks and was first to Stanzi. Lane ran around Kinney and Doering and got to Stanzi a split second after Kinney.
Not a good day. These guys would be the first to tell you.
"We know as an offensive line we need to pick things up," left tackle Bryan Bulaga said. "We made a lot of mistakes. We need to clean it up this Saturday."
The OL will welcome back two veteran performers against the Cyclones -- RT Kyle Calloway and G Julian Vandervelde. Calloway's suspension has been served and his IT band troubles are behind him, coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday. Vandervelde has been cleared to play after early-summer arm surgery. Now, it's a matter of how much practice he's missed. Ferentz said he'll play some this week.
It's been musical chairs throughout camp. The goal is always the best five.
"The best five are going to play, regardless of who it is," sophomore guard Adam Gettis said. "As long as we know we have our best five on the field, that should make everybody happy. As long as we have the best five out there, we know we can play as hard as we can and just play football, basically."
The returns of Calloway and Vandervelde will help. That's 25 and 15 career starts. Senior Dace Richardson will move to guard and compete with Doering and Gettis for playing time.
"It kind of solidifies some things, getting guys back who were starters all last year always helps," Bulaga said. "That's a big deal for us. Obviously, what they bring will help. Julian is a great offensive guard and Kyle is a two-year starter who's a very talented guy. He's going to help out everything."
UNI's Chuck Kinney (98, top) and James Ruffin (44) and Iowa's Adam Gettis (73, top), Bryan Bulaga (79, left) and Dan Doering (74) try to recover a fumble during the first quarter of the Hawkeyes' 17-16 home opener against University of Northern Iowa at Kinnick Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2009, in Iowa City. UNI recovered the fumble. (Gazette/Liz Martin)
