New teams on top in 2A, Class A
Jeff Linder Sep. 7, 2015 5:56 pm, Updated: Sep. 7, 2015 8:52 pm
This week's Gazette/KCRG/KGYM football poll contains co-No. 1 teams in Class 2A and a top-ranked team in Class A that received no first-place votes.
Albia and Spirit Lake share the top spot in 2A after last week's top two teams (North Fayette Valley and Central Lyon/George-Little Rock) were beaten Friday. Both of this week's co-leaders picked up 65 points this week, and both received three first-place votes.
There's a new No. 1 team in Class A, as well. Denver takes the top spot from Gladbrook-Reinbeck after the Rebels were defeated, 28-21, by 1A No. 2 Dike-New Hartford.
Denver sits on top despite receiving no first-place votes, compared to five for Gladbrook-Reinbeck. The Cyclones were No. 2 on six ballots.
The other top-rated teams remained the same. West Des Moines Valley is No. 1 in Class 4A, Pella in 3A, Iowa City Regina in 1A and Newell-Fonda in 8-Player.
Pella and Regina are defending state champions, and both have been unanimous No. 1s in their respective classes all season.
Valley is followed in 4A by archrival West Des Moines Dowling. Bettendorf is third. Cedar Rapids Kennedy jumped four spots to No. 6 after edging Cedar Rapids Washington, 28-24, Friday at Kingston Stadium. The Warriors fell seven notches to No. 10.
West Delaware climbs two spots in No. 2 in 3A after a pair of impressive wins. Cedar Rapids Xavier is third.
