One win away from achieving a childhood, and community. dream.
After a 42-14 victory over the Red Raiders of Williamsburg, the only thing standing in our way from achieving the goal we have been working toward since 5th grade is ... Mount Vernon.
For the second time this year, we will be facing the Mustangs in a game that has everything on the line.
Last time, it was for the district championship. Tonight, it is for a trip to Cedar Falls and the UNI-Dome and a chance to to play in the state semifinals.
Anamosa came into the 2015 season without ever having a playoff win. We now have two within a five-day span. Anamosa had never seen a team with more than nine wins. We have 11.
We are not satisfied with 11 victories and a couple of playoff wins, though.
Our goal from the beginning of the year, and from fifth grade, was to make it to the Dome.
One win away.
Mount Vernon has been a rival of ours ever since we started playing football. From the very beginning, in middle school, we would always have to battle it out against the Mustangs, It has turned into quite the rivalry throughout the years.
It has gone from the two teams battling it out for bragging rights in a middle school football game where maybe 30 people watched to a battle that has a potential state championship on the line with hundreds, maybe thousands of people, watching.
Tonight marks the night where we go for that childhood, and community, dream that we have been going after for all those years.
One win away.
Anamosa quarterback Kolin Schulte hands the ball to an official after scoring a touchdown during the fourth quarter of a game against Mount Vernon in early October. The two teams meet again tonight for a berth in the state semifinals. (Jim Slosiarek/The Gazette)
