Poll: Most would blame Republicans for government shutdown

A new poll out Monday morning suggests that congressional Republicans -- more than President Barack Obama -- would shoulder the blame if the government shuts down.

The survey, by CNN/ORC International, said Republicans would be blamed by 46-36 percent over the president. Some 13 percent would point their fingers at both the president and the GOP Congress.

"The number who would hold congressional Republicans responsible has gone down by 5 points since early September, and the number who would blame Obama is up 3 points in that same time," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said. "Those changes came among most demographic groups."

Six in 10 questioned said it is more important for Congress to avoid a shutdown than to make major changes to the new health care law. That's the position Republicans are holding to as the shutdown clock winds down.
