Judicial system failed abused child

To the editor:
Is anyone else as sorely disappointed in our judicial system as myself after reading Shelly Johns is receiving probation after openly admitting to abusing her child to law enforcement? ('Mother of Amber Alert victim avoids prison time,” July 8).
Since when is putting a cigarette out near someone's eye OK? Also, 'smacking her, pulling her hair and kicking her.” Oh, and let's not leave out admitting to smoking meth while her daughter was present.
What does a kid with a role model such as Shelly Johns get her for Mother's Day? A no contact order between the two was lifted. What in the world is going on here? This poor kid deserves better.
Law enforcement seems to question the respect from our youth and with the outcome of this situation it's no wonder there is that lack of trust or respect. What's the motto, to protect and serve? Not.
