The family of Kamryn Schlitter issued a statement to the media this afternoon, following news reports that the little girl's death has been ruled a homicide.
Kamryn, of Cedar Rapids, was just 18 months old when she died March 28. She had been hospitalized for a week after medics found her suffering from seizure-like symptoms inside an apartment at 245 Clymer Rd. in Hiawatha.
In an e-mail to KCRG-TV9, Kamryn's mother, Nicole King, and maternal grandmother, Jeri King, issued the following statement:
“The loss of Kamryn has devastated our lives and justice for her is all we are clinging to. Her memory will live on through us and we are so blessed to have been apart of her beautiful life. We will miss her always and love her forever.”
Kamryn's death was ruled a homicide caused by head injuries due to “non-accidental (inflicted) trauma,” a death certificate filed by Johnson County Medical Examiner Stephen Scheckel shows.
No arrests have been made, but Hiawatha Police Chief Dennis Marks said Monday investigators have spoken to the person who was caring for Kamryn the night of March 21. He said the case is progressing and has not stalled.
“We have spoken with several people as part of the investigation, but as far as identifying somebody as being a suspect or person of interest, I'm not going to do that at this point,” Marks said.
