Ride for the earth

CEDAR RAPIDS - Spin on over to Sokol Park in southwest Cedar Rapids Saturday for an Earth Day Bike Ride and Celebration sponsored by Eco Lips, the Cedar Rapids-based organic lip balm company.

The free event begins at noon Saturday with a 55-mile sport ride. A 17-mile casual route leaves at 2 p.m., and a 7-mile family ride begins at 3 p.m. All routes follow the Cedar River Trail-South and return to Sokol Park. Route maps will be provided at Sokol Park, located at the corner of 16th Avenue and A Street. SW, and signs will be posted along the route.

“We started this event to raise awareness in our community about challenges we face as a planet, and to recognize the local organizations that are practicing sustainable choices,” says Eco Lips CEO Mark Patterson. “Combining a bike ride and an Earth Day celebration is a natural fit with our passion for promoting the active-organic lifestyle.”

Activities in Sokol Park include exhibitors from area earth-friendly organizations, games and activities for children and music by DJ Slim Pickens from 3 to 7 p.m. Food and beer will be available for purchase.

Join the after-party celebration at Parlor City Pub & Eatery, 1125 Third St., Cedar Rapids. There will be live music from 8 p.m. to midnight, food and drink specials and a raffle for prizes.
