Hayden, Thelma R.
Thelma R. Hayden of Waterloo, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday morning, July 5, 2011 at Newaldaya Lifescapes Care Center of Cedar Falls. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories. Visitation will take place after 2 p.m. at the Chapel on Thursday. Burial will take place at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean (Richard) Heaverlo of Cedar Rapids and Julia (Hank) Dark of Cedar Falls; and two sons, Jerry of Waterloo and James (Mary Jane) of Logansport, Ind.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gene; parents, Emma and Ervin Dillard; and two brothers, John and Lloyd Dillard.
Born Aug. 25, 1922, in Perry, Iowa, she married Eugene Hayden on Aug. 30, 1939 in Indianola. While living in Cedar Rapids she worked at Washington and Jefferson High Schools as the head baker and was a supervisor at Killian's Department Store in the billing department from where she retired. She was a former member of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. During her time in Oelwein she belonged to Zion Lutheran Church, and at the time of her death was a current member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Waterloo.
Thelma was well known for her self-taught needlework from which family and many organizations benefited. She was always active in her church groups and the lives of her grandkids and great-grandkids while her health permitted.
Memorial donations in Thelma's honor may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Heart Association.
