An Iowa City mother and her boyfriend were charged with three counts each of child endangerment Sunday after police were called to the apartment by the woman's 8-year-old son.
The boy called police around 6:40 a.m. and asked for help. When officers arrived at 2401 Highway 6 E, Apt. 1015, Anacleto Lopez-Dejesus, 35, answered the door, smelling of alcohol and showing poor balance, Iowa City police reported.
Lopez-Dejesus "admitted to drinking and asked officers several times if he could have another beer," police said.
His blood-alcohol content was .241, police said. People are considered legally drunk at .08.
Angelica Fernandez-Martinez, 25, also appeared intoxicated and had a blood-alcohol content of .245.
Fernandez-Martinez's three children, ages 4, 6 and 8, were walking barefoot in the apartment, where glass covered the living room floor, police said.
"Both the defendant and the boyfriend showed no responsibility or supervision for the health and safety of the three children," police reported.
Fernandez-Martinez and Lopez-Dejesus were each being held in the Johnson County jail on $5,000 cash bond.
The Iowa Department of Human Services was called in to assist with the children, Iowa City police reported.
