Letter: Presidential spending isn’t new phenomenon

In 1957, amid public and editorial criticism, then President Dwight D. Eisenhower proposed the purchase of two helicopters to supplement Air Force One.
During a March news conference to promote his latest budget, 'Ike” was asked by a Chicago journalist: 'Sir, do you feel there any economies that you can make in the executive branch to help cut government spending? For instance, would you be willing to do without that pair of helicopters that have been proposed for getting you out to the golf course a little faster than you can make it in a car?”
As Yogi Berra would have opined, 'Seems like deja vu all over again.”
