Marion business is tremendous asset

Marion Iron is a thriving part of Marion's economy with an enviable history of extraordinary citizenship.
It was the original recycler here, long before our blue plastic bins. It has employed hundreds of men and women in good jobs. It contributes greatly to our tax base. And much more.
A century ago, Morris Katz began a scrap metal business with a horse-drawn wagon. Years later, he and his sons, Henry and Bert, located Katz Salvage on the edge of town. (There was a farm across the road.)
As their business grew, the city grew with them - and thanks to them - from developments for businesses and residents to contributed land for fire and police.
Ultimately, Bert and Henry would give the majority of their earnings back to Marion and Cedar Rapids, generosity that is humbling in its spirit and breadth.
When the torch was passed to Pete Brown and his sons Marvin and Jim in 1985, it burned ever brighter. They changed the name to Marion Iron and have transitioned smartly into the 21st century while honoring the past. They, too, are excellent citizens and businessmen.
Their move to the industrial park is a sign of Marion's success and creates opportunity for new businesses in their old location.
Without Katz Salvage and Marion Iron, Marion would be considerably less than it is today. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude.
