Muskegon, Mich., is the latest USHL city

Feb. 11, 2010 7:04 pm
How about this one? Muskegon, Mich., is axing its professional hockey team in favor of the United States Hockey League.
That was announced this week, as the International Hockey League's Muskegon Lumberjacks announced they are folding after this season. The IHL also is the home of the Quad City Mallards.
Replacing the Lumberjacks will be a USHL franchise owned by Josh Mervis, who you may remember as owner of the old Danville Wings and Rochester Mustangs. Mervis' franchise has been dormant.
Muskegon will join Dubuque in the USHL next season, bringing the league to 16 teams. It has had professional hockey for 50 years.
It'll be interesting to see how the divisions shake out next season.
