Mavis, James 'Jimmy'
James “Jimmy” Mavis, 56, of Iowa City, died peacefully at his home Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service, Iowa City, where friends may call after 10 a.m. The Rev. Ken Royar will officiate. Burial will be at Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
Jimmy was born Dec. 17, 1953, in Iowa City, the son of Raymond and Ruby Schenk Mavis. He was a 1972 graduate of West High School and a past member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Jimmy had been employed for many years at Goodwill Industries and later worked in the lunch program at Horace Mann School. In his younger years he worked with his father at Ray Mavis Trucking.
Jimmy enjoyed playing cards, watching western movies, especially those with John Wayne, and doing crossword puzzles. He loved spending time with children.
Jimmy is survived by his two sisters, Karen (Roger) Regennitter of Tipton and Judy (Dellis) Swartzendruber of Monticello; his brother, Robert “Bobby” Mavis of Iowa City; his aunt and uncle, June Eckrich of Sun City, Ariz., and Stanley Schenk of Iowa City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
