CEDAR RAPIDS — Mobile recreation is rolling back into town this summer starting Monday.
The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department’s Rollin’ Recmobile will begin its summer schedule at 9:30 a.m. Monday, bringing recreation equipment, games and staff to lead activities at 13 parks each week this summer, according to a news release.
The van also has a Wi-Fi hot spot that park users can use during stops.
The Recmobile began in 2020 as a way to bring recreational programming close to neighborhoods to reduce transportation barriers. Youth can participate at no cost at any park, as many times per week as they like.
The van will provide expanded programs in parks this year because of relaxed COVID-19 mitigation measures. Activities will include kickball, spikeball, GaGa ball, an obstacle course, bounce house, karaoke, lawn bowling, dance events and contests. Staff will plan new activities each week.
The Recmobile will serve as a mobile Neighborhood Resource Center this year thanks to a $10,000 grant from the National League of Cities to provide equipment to boost engagement with city services. The grant will provide digital survey stations, chairs, outdoor misters and resources such as water bottles, flashlights and insulated grocery bags.
“We are excited to see outreach grow through the Rollin’ Recmobile,” Parks and Recreation Director Scott Hock said in a statement. “Maximizing the use of the van to connect with citizens of all ages is the ultimate goal.”
Partnering organizations also will join the Recmobile on specific days to provide information and additional activities. These groups include Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, ISU Extension, Cedar Rapids Public Library, Iowa Legal Aid, Early Bird CR, St. Paul’s Church, Green Iowa, United We March Forward, Neighborhood Finance Corp., Linn County Elections, Waypoint, Freedom Festival and Jane Boyd.
The city of Cedar Rapids, Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation, Cedar Rapids Kiwanis and the Cedar Rapids Parks Foundation support the Recmobile.
The van follows a consistent schedule. Schedule adjustments and activities will be announced through CRNewsNow.com alerts. Park stops will be postponed or canceled in case of storms or tornado watches.
