Courtney, Harold E. 'Gene'
Harold E. “Gene” Courtney, 85, of Iowa City, formerly of Fremont, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 12, at Lensing's Oak Hill, 210 Holiday Rd., Coralville, with the Rev. John McKinstry officiating. Visitation will be after 10 a.m. Monday. Graveside Committal will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Indianapolis Cemetery, near What Cheer.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics or to the Oaknoll Foundation.
Gene was born Feb. 17, 1927, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of Charles and Amanda Courtney. He served his Country during World War II and in 1948 married Mildred Glandon in Pella.
For most of his life, Gene drove semi-trucks for Ruan Transport hauling gasoline. He was proud to earn and receive the “million plus mile safety award” for his career.
Gene and Mildred moved to Iowa City in 1988 from Fremont. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Cubs.
Gene is survived by his son, Darrel (Cynthia) Courtney of Coralville; his daughter, Binky (Terry) Strunk of Plano; five grandchildren, Brandon, Nathan, Nicholas, Melissa and Amber; five great-grandchildren; his brother and sister, Donald (Maxine) Courtney of Ottumwa and Frances Karsten of Oskaloosa; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 2000; two infant grandsons, Jason and Steffan; five brothers; and one sister.
