Niemeyer scheduled to coach

CEDAR RAPIDS -- Larry Niemeyer is penciled in to make an appearance at the girls' basketball event that bears his name.

The former coach at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, Niemeyer is scheduled to coach the 3A/4A/5A Select Gray team Saturday at the Larry Niemeyer IGCA All-Star girls' basketball series.

The two-day, six-game series runs Saturday and Sunday at Johnson Hall on the campus of Kirkwood Community College. Action begins both days at noon.

Niemeyer coached at Adel, then at Jefferson. He retired at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.

Miss Iowa Basketball 2014 Alexis Conaway of MOC-Floyd Valley is not on the list of participants. But Haley Lorenzen, the Gatorade player of the year and the Gazette/KCRG area player of the year from Iowa City High, is slated to play for 3A/4A/5A Select White.

Lorenzen will play for the University of Florida.
