Heelan catches on, runs past Wahlert

DES MOINES -- Sioux City Heelan went to transition. And made a transformation.

Down 10 points after one quarter, the third-ranked Crusaders went into overdrive and defeated No. 6 Dubuque Wahlert, 77-60, in a Class 3A quarterfinal at the girls' state basketball tournament Tuesday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

"Our shots started falling, and we got our transition game going a little more," said Heelan's Madison Yohe, who recorded 21 points, five assists and six steals. "We started slow, then we got it going."

Heelan (24-1) was trailing 22-12 at halftime, but got even at 34-all by intermission and pulled steadily away in the second half. The Crusaders will face No. 2 MOC-Floyd Valley (26-0) in a semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday.

The champion of the MVC Mississippi Division, Wahlert (20-5) saw an 11-game winning streak come to an end.

"It's a tough loss," Wahlert Coach Kris Spiegler said. "This team has really become close.

"We had a great first quarter, but then we gave up too many offensive rebounds and too many turnovers."

MaKayla Augustine led the Crusaders with 22 points, making half of her 10 3-point attempts.

Tessa Leytem paced Wahlert with 21 points. Logan Lynch added 13 points and Beth Walker contributed 10 points and 16 rebounds.

The game contained 49 fouls and 60 free throws. Heelan made 26 of 42 foul shots.
