The Palace, a longtime eyesore at 616 Fourth Ave. SE, came down on a rainy Thursday, marking the end of the abandoned apartment building.
The building, built in 1910, once had 25 sleeping rooms with five kitchens and 12 bathrooms. Kory Nanke was buying the building on contract from Farmers State Bank and, in 2007, had dreams of converting it into six 1,600-square-foot condominiums.
Nanke did get the property cleaned up but didn't have the money to renovate it.
It temporarily became an overnight stopping place for transient squatters until the city boarded it up.
The building has long been on the city's list of problem properties - until Thursday, when workers from D.W. Zinser Co. demolished it.
