One dead in five separate fires in Eastern Iowa

One person is dead in a string of reported fires in Eastern Iowa the past 24 hours.
Air condition could be cause of fire at manufactured home in Cedar Rapids

Ave. Dr. SW, Lot 8, at 1:41 p.m. Saturday. Several neighbors indicated that a window air conditioner was on fire on the backside of the home, fire officials said.
One scene, firefighters made simultaneous exterior and interior fire attack. As a result, the fire and heat damage was contained to the back half of the structure, but smoke damage occurred throughout.
No one was home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The owner of the property is Michele Clinton, 37. Authorities say Clinton was in the process of selling the home at the time of the fire and had moved most of her personal possessions out of the structure.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
One killed in apartment fire in Dubuque
DUBUQUE – One person was killed after a fire around 7:30 p.m. Friday at Washington Park Place Apartments, 605 Bluff St., in Dubuque.
Assistant Fire Chief Rick Steines confirmed the death a few hours after the fire. Steines said the fire was still being investigated.
No other details were immediately available.
Discarded smoking materials ignited North Liberty fire
A North Liberty home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage early this morning after discarded smoking materials sparked a fire, officials said.
Fire crews say smoke detectors alerted the residents at the one-story home at 410 W. Zeller St., in North Liberty to the fire around 12:50 a.m.
No one was injured from the fire. Firefighters took about 45 minute to extinguish the fire. The Red Cross assisted one adult and two children with clothing and food.
The cause of the fire has been determined to be accidental due to discarded smoking materials, according to a release by North Liberty Fire Department Capt. Craig Voparil.
Lightning causes fire at Washington apartment building
WASHINGTON, IA – Lightning from a thunderstorm sparked a fire on the roof of a an apartment building in Washington Friday night.
Washington County authorities say crews were dispatched at 10:04 p.m. to 311 E. Main St., in Washington after lightning hit the roof of the building. Fire damage was contained to the roof and attic.
The apartment building was evacuated and no one was hurt. Officials say no one was displaced.
Electrical fire reported at Kalona manufactured home
KALONA – An electrical fire caused damage to a manufactured home in Kalona Saturday morning, the Washington County Sheriff's Office says.
The fire was reported at 11:54 a.m. at 107 S. 6th St., Lot 14, in Kalona – the home of Stephanie Corkery. Dispatchers were told flames were visible from underneath the home.
Kalona Fire Chief Steve Yotty said the fire was electrical and the Corkery family will not be able to return to the residence right away.
No one was inside the residence and no injuries were reported. Red Cross was contacted and will be assisting the family.
Firefighters put out a fire at 700 41st Avenue Drive SW, Lot 8, in Cedar Rapids. Neighbors called in the fire at 1:41pm Saturday saying that the rear of the home was on fire. Upon arrival firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames. (Chris Blake)
