My letter on Mexican-American immigrants, Oct. 8, 2012, a catalyst for pending immigration reform legislation, was mailed Oct. 8, 2012, to the paragon of a statesman, Sen. John McCain and several other leading congressmen. Statements and arguments of my letter have been accepted and wielded effectively by the above eminent legislators. Verbatim paragraphs from my Oct. 8, 2012, letter include the following:
The plight of Mexican-American immigrants in recent years has been politicized in grandstanding and posturing while ignoring the human consequences. Mexican Americans are thrifty, hardworking, reliable and family oriented with values of the pioneers that made America prosper.
Mexican Americans are the proud descendants of pre-Columbian Americans of advanced civilizations and the subsequent magnificent Mexican Spanish cultural heritage, which is a further enhancement of our society. They embrace an ethos of optimism, compassion, sacrifice and humility. The Mexican-American family represents a bright future for the nation and should be fully assisted in their aspirations and ideals.
Now is the time for a fresh start. The most propitious policy concerning Mexican-American immigrants is one of flexibility and welcome. There should be an early, equitable, humane and decisive resolution of this critical matter.
