Cedar Rapids, IA - Alzheimer's disease is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain and the 5th leading cause of death in Iowa. Despite promising scientific advances, there is still no way to prevent, treat or cure this disease. Local Alzheimer's advocates who are interested in educating elected leaders to make Alzheimer's disease a public policy priority and prepare Iowa for the future of Alzheimer's are invited to attend “Alzheimer's on the Campaign Trail: An Advocate Training Session” on Wednesday, September 26th in Cedar Falls or Thursday, September 27, 2012 in Cedar Rapids.
Iowa is experiencing an increase in its older population as the first wave of baby boomers reach 65, the age of greatest risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. More than 10,000 baby boomers a day turn the age 65 – that's one every eight seconds, a pattern that is expected to continue for the next 19 years. There are currently 69,000 residents in Iowa aged 65 and older battling Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. In less than 15 years, this number is expected to soar to 77,000 people in Iowa.
Advocates are invited to gather from 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Cedar Falls Public Library on Wednesday, September 26th or at the Human Services Campus in Cedar Rapids on Thursday, September 27th to attend a special training session about Alzheimer's advocacy. Special guest Joe Franco, MPS, Associate Director of Advocacy, National Alzheimer's Association will present on specific strategies and tactics for talking to fellow voters, discussing Alzheimer's legislation with candidates, and attending, participating in, or even hosting their own election event with an Alzheimer's focus.
“Iowa plays an important role in our nation's democratic process. Iowans are one of the first to make their selection for the U.S. Presidential nominees and also play a critical role in selecting the President and congressional leaders,” says Amanda Miller, Program Manager for the Alzheimer's Association. “Now Iowans have a tremendous opportunity to raise the profile of another important political issue; Alzheimer's disease is ruining lives, devastating families and bankrupting our country.”
Alzheimer's on the Campaign Trail: An Advocate Training Session will provide advocates with the tools and skill needed to talk to candidates about Alzheimer's disease, ask about their plans for addressing this public health crisis, and raise awareness among voters of the importance of strong Alzheimer's legislation” says Miller.
RSVP is required for this free event and dinner will be provided. Registration and additional details can be found at www.alz.org/eci or by calling 1.800.272.3900.
