The City of Cedar Rapids reports there is a large power outage in the downtown area.
Traffic lights are out from Third Avenue to Eighth Avenue SE and from First Street to Sixth or Seventh Street SE.
The outage also hit Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids early this afternoon. The facility was on emergency power and generators until about 4:30 p.m.
Alliant Energy spokesperson Justin Foss said it's not yet clear what caused the outage, and the company isn't yet sure when power might be restored.
550 customers in downtown Cedar Rapids are without power, Foss said.
The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning into Tuesday evening. The wind was expected to diminish Tuesday night before strengthening again on Wednesday.
All but one of the College Community School District's buildings lost power for a short time this morning. School district officials say the power outage lasted about 20 minutes. Alliant Energy has informed the district that there may be further temporary disruptions of power throughout the day due to ongoing high winds.
Traffic lights in areas of downtown Cedar Rapids were blank Tuesday afternoon making motorists direct themselves. Lights from 5th Street to 1st Street Se on 2nd Ave where the majority of the lights not working. It is unclear if high winds played a factor in the lights being out. (Chris Blake/The Gazette)
