Kernels get series split with Cougars, 6-0

Geneva, IL – The Cedar Rapids Kernels picked up a series split with the Kane County Cougars with a 6-0 shutout win on Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, IL. Kernels starter Max Russell (1-1) picked up his first win as a Kernel, allowing six hits and striking out four over six scoreless innings.
Mike Kenney and Johnny Hellweg worked three scoreless innings out of the Kernels bullpen, allowing a combined two hits and striking out four. Kane County starter Jonathan Joseph (1-4) allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits, walked three and struck out two over five innings in taking the loss.
Richard Cates went 2-5 with a double and two RBI and Terrell Alliman went 1-3 with a double and two RBI. Jon Karcich extended his hitting streak to 18 games, going 1-4 with a run scored. Anthony Aliotti went 2-4 for Kane County.
The Kernels return to Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday, August 7th and open a seven game home stand with games against Beloit and Kane County. Fans can enjoy a spectacular fireworks show, presented by Z 102.9 and J&M Displays, following the Kernels game with Beloit at 6:35 pm. Gates open at 5:30 pm.
