Letter: Bring gaming industry to Cedar Rapids

So, I went to the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel in downtown Cedar Rapids. The hotel was nice. The usual group of whiners were there. I believe every casino within a 100 mile radius of Cedar Rapids was represented by their executive branch, their city and their county, all whining cannibalism of revenue when Cedar Rapids is OKed for a casino or three. Since when is competition a synonym for cannibalism?
After the whining went on for an hour so, Justin Shields said it best, 'hog wash.” Mayor Ron Corbett pointed out that it was the State of Iowa and Linn County being shorted by the commission protection of existing casinos. The gaming industry as a whole would be much better off if Cedar Rapids
was included. Yes, it's an industry with payroll, nonprofit donations and what many people like.
And finally, the local folks who enjoy casinos and all they have to offer would benefit the most with competition among casinos. Better payoffs, better less expensive shows, food and lodging, all right here. No long drives.
Competition is good for all concerned including the whiners, especially their customers.
