Get involved to save historic structures

I read with great sadness the Feb. 5 opinion articles pointing out the increasing loss of historic structures in Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. While it's true we've lost many historic buildings to “modern development” and flooding, we don't have to lose the rest to the wrecking ball!
Downtown Cedar Rapids demonstrates that “revitalization” doesn't require the wholesale demolition of old buildings; a mixture of historic and modern structures can and do complement each other. “Creative reuse” of historic structures should be our goal and there are plenty of examples around the country for inspiration.
Similarly, the University of Iowa should work with residents in Iowa City to ensure their projects don't undermine the integrity of historic districts in that community. Citizens must get involved, however, if there is to be any hope of preserving our remaining historic buildings, no matter where they are located.
Finally, residents should know that when their projects involve federal money, local governments and businesses are required by law to assess the impact of their proposed projects on historic structures or other cultural resources in the area (NHPA, Section 106). They must also find ways to avoid or lessen the impact of any proposed project on these sites. Further, interested individuals have a right to be involved with discussions concerning these projects.
To find out more, or get involved protecting historic structures, contact the State Historic Preservation Office at (515) 281-4221.
