(AP) - Iowa could be at risk of flooding this spring, but a lot depends on what happens during the rest of the winter.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines has issued a flood outlook that shows the risk is "near to above normal." Hydrologist Jeff Zogg says it's vague because Iowa may or may not get a lot of snow between now and mid-March when the spring thaw typically starts.
Current snowfall amounts on the ground range from a trace in extreme southeast Iowa to 20 inches in northern Iowa along the Minnesota border. The statewide seasonal snowfall average for all of last winter was 49 inches, the sixth highest on record.
Iowa was swamped by flooding in 1993 and 2008, and came close last year.
