NORMAN, Okla. - Former Oklahoma coach Barry Switzer called his shot Friday on Twitter.
The College Football Hall of Famer, who won three national titles at Oklahoma and a Super Bowl with the Dallas Cowboys, tweeted this before the Iowa State-Oklahoma game: “Since everyone beats ISU at home, I want to be the first to congratulate @OU_CoachStoops on tying the record of 157 wins!”
Oklahoma's 48-10 victory did move Bob Stoops' record to 157-39 in 15 seasons, tying him with Switzer for the most coaching wins at Oklahoma.
“Congratulations to Bob Stoops,” Iowa State Coach Paul Rhoads said after the game. “I said as much to him, but (former Oklahoma coaches) Bud Wilkinson and Barry Switzer, wow. To pass one and tie the other, and certainly will move past Barry as this season comes to a close. Big congratulations to Bob.”
Stoops, who played and coached at Iowa, improved to 9-0 against Iowa State. Switzer was 15-0-1.
IRVING STAYED HOME
Defensive tackle David Irving did not make the trip after being charged with domestic assault following an incident with his girlfriend Wednesday.
“There's a lot of facts with this,” Rhoads said. “And we're still gathering them. We're processing them, and as we always do, we'll continue to do that and do what the right thing is.”
Irving missed last week's TCU game with what Rhoads termed “a health issue that is non-football related.”
DEFENSIVE WOES
The Iowa State defense could not sustain momentum from last week for longer than a half against Oklahoma.
After holding the Sooners to 110 first-half yards, the defense turned porous once the Sooners pulled unproductive and possibly injured quarterback Blake Bell in favor of red-shirt freshman Trevor Knight, yielding a season-high 405 rushing yards (339 in the second half) and three long second-half touchdown runs.
“We knew that (Knight) wanted to run more than he wanted to pass,” linebacker Jeremiah George said. “If everyone takes care of their gap, there should be nowhere for a quarterback or running back to run.”
THIS AND THAT
- Senior Albert Gary broke a collarbone on an 11-yard kickoff return in the third quarter and will miss the remainder of the season.
- Tailback DeVondrick Nealy's streak of four consecutive games with a touchdown was snapped.
- George recorded 10 tackles, the eighth time in 10 games the senior has recorded double-digit tackles.
- Tight end E.J. Bibbs caught five passes for 34 yards. The junior from Arizona Western C.C. picked the Cyclones over Oklahoma during his recruitment
