Schatz, Velda M.
Velda M. Schatz, 89, of Monticello, died Thursday, July 8, 2010, at her home following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Monticello, with interment in Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Darryl Larson will officiate at the services. Friends may call from 4 until 7 p.m. today at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.
Survivors include four children, Kenneth Schatz of Sioux City, Diana (Robert) Muchmore of Rowley, Stanley (Ruth) Schatz of Osage and Linda Schatz of Clarksburg, Md.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law, Ruby Toenjes of Monticello.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Edna Dirks, Irma Bodeker and Luella Ulferts; two brothers, Leslie Toenjes and Irvin Toenjes; daughter-in-law, Janice Schatz; sisters-in-law, Pauline Toenjes and Marie Schatz; and brothers-in-law, Ernie Dirks, John Bodeker, Carl Ulferts and Peter Tsuris.
Velda Marie Schatz, daughter of Arend Gerhard and Mary Zimmerman Toenjes, was born May 8, 1921, at their country home near Anamosa. She was baptized June 12, 1921, and confirmed April 14, 1935, at Wayne Zion Lutheran Church, rural Wayne Township. Wilfred C. Schatz and Velda M. Toenjes were married Feb. 19, 1941. They farmed in Castle Grove and Wayne Township until retiring in 1980, when they moved to Monticello.
Velda was active in church work, acting as a Sunday school teacher and chairman of the Bible Group and of the Sewing Circle. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.
Velda was most appreciative of those who made it possible for her to stay in her own home, including her caregivers and Above and Beyond Home Health.
