Schuring plays the comeback card

DES MOINES — A shot of adrenaline. Then a squeal of triumph.
That was Taylor Schuring's stretch run, in a nutshell.
Schuring overcame Boone freshman Dianna Slight at the end, giving Decorah the Class 3A girls' sprint medley relay championship at the state track meet Saturday at Drake Stadium.
'I just had this huge boost of adrenaline,' said Schuring, a sophomore. 'With 200 meters to go, I said, 'I can do this.' But she was still so far ahead of me.'
But not for long.
Schuring anchored in 56.5 seconds to give the Vikings a title to highlight a quite productive weekend.
As expected, Davenport Assumption (107 points), Mount Pleasant (77) and Dubuque Wahlert (68) were the class of the field, with the Knights winning their second straight title.
Decorah was the best of the rest, placing fourth with 49 points.
Monica Tappe, Alexis Hove and Dailen Folkedahl ran the first three legs, and Decorah was timed in 1:48.46.
The Vikings' quartet was the lone area 3A girls winner Saturday. Olivia Loy of Anamosa was second in the 200 and third in the 100, to go with her 400 title won Thursday.
'I really wanted to win that 100; I was a little disappointed with that,' said Loy, who finished as a 13-time state placewinner.
'I did the best I could, so I'm proud of that.'
Clear Creek Amana was second to Mount Pleasant in the shuttle hurdle relay.
