Dr. Karen Elizabeth Leonard, 55, of Longmont, Colo., passed away March 22, 2010, at her home.
She was born June 25, 1954, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the late Bernard Musel and Mary (Breitbach) Pink. She graduated from LaSalle High School in 1972 and from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor's degree in science in 1976. Karen went on to receive her Doctor of Medicine degree where she was awarded the Chair in Medicine and Surgery during her fourth year of medical school. She practiced family medicine for 29 years in both California and Colorado and was a member and Fellow of the American Association of Family Physicians.
She married John D. Leonard on May 31, 1980, in Iowa City, Iowa. She moved to Longmont, Colo., from San Mateo, Calif., in 1993.
Karen was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and spending time with family and friends.
Karen is survived by her husband, John Leonard; four daughters, Megan Leonard, Mackenzie Leonard, Maureen Leonard and Margeaux Leonard; her mother, Mary Pink; her stepfather, Dr. James Pink; five brothers, Steve Musel, Dave Musel, Jim Musel, Kenny Pink and Jim Pink; and three sisters, Susan Ladesic, Kathy Volland and Theresa Wickman.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, March 28, at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel, Longmont. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Longmont. Cremation will follow services at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the International Myeloma Foundation.
