Statehouse walkout gross violation of oath
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I am disgusted with some of our legislators for their actions in the Iowa Statehouse. To walk out (Feb. 29) because they didn't like the (expanded gun rights bills) presented to them is a gross violation of their oath.
House Democratic leader Kevin McCarthy's comments on Iowa turning into the “wild, wild West” are unfounded. There are 40-plus other states that have an amendment to their constitution regarding the right to self-defense. There are also 22-plus states with a “stand your ground” law. Where is the bloodshed? Where is the dramatic spike in shooting deaths? It's not there. The crime rate in states that have those laws has actually dropped.
The Iowa legislators that have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution are in violation of that oath, and need to be reminded of who they work for. Their personal opinions have no business in the decision-making process. The decisions should be based on facts and laws.
McCarthy should be reprimanded for the horrendous violations of his oath and his attempts at stealing liberty from the citizens.
Let legislators know we will not take this kind of tyranny in our state. It's time to fight back.
