Florida's Meyer takes discipline to a new level

Nov. 3, 2009 12:47 pm
A low level, that is.
The University of Florida football coach has suspended standout linebacker Brandon Spikes for the first half of the Gators' game Saturday against Vanderbilt because Spikes intentionally tried to gouge the eyes of a Georgia running back after a tackle in last week's game.
"I don't condone that," Meyer said. "I understand what goes on on the football [field], but there's no place for that. We're going to suspend Brandon for the first half of the Vanderbilt game. I spoke with him. That's not who he is. That's not who we are. He got caught up in emotion."
What a disciplinarian, folks. You do something wrong, and Coach Meyer will penalize the heck out of you, man.
A half. A whole half, Spikes is being suspended for.
Oregon player gets suspended for the entire season for punching an opposing player. Spikes misses 30 minutes for trying to poke the eyes out of an opponent.
Seems fair. After all, Florida's got a national championship to play for. Naturally, the Southeastern Conference supports Meyer in what must have been a gut-wrenching disciplinary decision.
Here's video of the gouging from YouTube. What do you think?
