Iowa adds 132 virus cases Thursday

Iowa added 132 new COVID-19 cases and four new, confirmed deaths on Thursday.

The new numbers bring the state totals to 371,133 cases and 6,047 deaths, according to Iowa Department of Public Health data.

The state’s seven-day average for cases is 140, the lowest since 135 on April 17, 2020. Thursday was the 15th consecutive day the average has gone down. The seven-day average for deaths was three.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday afternoon, the number of fully-vaccinated Iowans was 1,291,015 or 40.92 percent of the state’s population.

The total number of people vaccinated within the state, non-Iowans included, was 1,342,686. The total number of doses administered was 2,743,101.

In Linn County, 103,850 people or 45.81 percent of the county population had been fully vaccinated as of Thursday afternoon.

In Johnson County, that number was 78,786 or 52.13 percent of the county population.

New cases

Locally, Linn County added 11 cases for a county total of 21,035. The county’s seven-day average is 10, the lowest since June 20 of last year.

Johnson County added six cases for a total of 14,556 and a seven-day average of five.

Of Thursday’s new cases, 33 were among people 17 and younger, bringing the number in that age range to 44,479.

Confirmed deaths

Thursday’s four deaths were people over age 80, according to IDPH data. A death from March in the 41-60 age group was removed from the state’s death totals.

All four deaths reported Thursday took place in May, with one death each in Johnson, Fayette, Muscatine and Scott counties.

Hospitalizations

Across the state, hospitalizations remained at 120 on Thursday.

Patients in intensive care went from 32 to 31, the lowest number since 27 on March 31, 2020, which was the first day intensive care patient totals were released by the state. Patients on ventilators went from 17 to 16.

Long-term care facilities

As of Thursday, three long-term care facilities in Iowa had virus outbreaks with 22 individuals positive, the same numbers as Wednesday.
