More discussion needed on Marion camera plan

It's no secret speeding and careless driving has become a major problem in Cedar Rapids and Marion, but how do we better prevent it? Since 2010, Cedar Rapids has used automated traffic enforcement cameras (ATE) on various roadways, including I-380, to combat speeding as well as running red lights, and it seems that Marion is also looking into installing cameras as well.
Marion Police Chief Mike Kitsmiller has proposed adding these cameras to multiple intersections on Highway 151, and well as Highway 13 and Highway 100. I do have concerns about placing cameras specifically on Highway 100 without a specific change to the proposal. On the stretch of Highway 100 between First Ave SE/Highway 151 and Highway 13, there are five lighted intersections and the posted speed limit is 45 mph to Amar Drive, and 55 mph from there to Highway 13. I believe this is partially to blame for accidents on this stretch of roadway.
In addition to adding cameras on the aforementioned stretch of Highway 100 as proposed by Kitsmiller (at Menard Lane and East Post Road), I propose that the speed limit between Amar Drive and South 22nd St be reduced to 45 mph and signage indicating photo enforcement be added to further curtail speeding and prevent accidents in the future.
Protecting our roadways is important to our community and I believe that this proposal furthers that cause.
