Statehouse actions create a new Iowa

Our daughter, who grew up in Iowa and now lives in New York City, keeps asking me, “Dad, what’s happened to Iowa?” When she first moved to Manhattan, she would politely correct misperceptions about Iowa, many of them negative. She would proudly speak about our dedication to well-funded public education and our early progressive court rulings on school desegregation, women in the law and on same-sex marriage. She now feels dismayed by the radical, right-wing actions of our governor and legislators on voting rights, funding of our universities and women’s rights to control their future.
