Thankful for permission to drive

Time to get my driver's license renewed and make the drive to Marion. Possibly the Tuesday after a holiday, Thanksgiving, isn't the time to do this. At 9:30 a.m., should have arrived earlier, I stand in a long line to receive my pre-clearing questionnaire to fill out. I finally find an empty chair to sit and fill out my questionnaire.

I glance around to view a variety of those waiting - some senior citizens such as myself, young adults, mothers controlling their young children, some studying, a young man waiting to renew his UPS license. There are about eight flashing signs notifying the next number to be helped. We have received our number in the pre-clearing questionnaire. My number is 226, so I realize my patience will be tried. I notice three of the flashing lights are turned off. I assume it's coffee break time. After two hours, 226 is called. I answer a few questions, take an eye test and have my picture taken, remembering not to smile. I am told to sit and my name will be called to receive my temporary black and white license. I am to receive my driver's license in the mail.

As I walk out, I notice the same long line. Some are sitting on the floor for lack of chairs, those clutching their numbers, the signs flashing.

I remind myself I must be thankful for the permission to drive two more years.
