Police said it could be a few weeks before the autopsy results for Kylie Jo Perkins are released.
Perkins, 20, was found dead Wednesday in her Iowa City apartment at 1527 Arber Ave. Police said she was shot in the upper torso with a handgun illegally brought into the apartment by Alajuwon S. Johnson, 26.
Johnson is in the Johnson County Jail on a $67,000 cash-only bond and a $1,000 forfeitable bond to the Johnson County Clerk of Court. A preliminary hearing is set for 2 p.m. Thursday.
Police said Perkins and Johnson were involved with the mishandling of the semi-automatic handgun when it fired, striking Perkins in the chest.
Police reports say Johnson told officers that Perkins asked him to call for help for at least 10 minutes, but he didn't because of active warrants for his arrest. He asked a friend to call for help, but the friend gave an incorrect address for the shooting, which delayed emergency responders.
Police said Johnson was eventually arrested at 2425 Bartlet Rd., No. 2, and he admitted under questioning that he'd accidentally shot Perkins.
Johnson was charged with involuntary manslaughter, carrying weapons, possession of crack cocaine with intent to deliver and possession of marijuana. Involuntary manslaughter is a class “D” felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
