Electrical safety advice from the fire department
City of Cedar Rapids
Nov. 9, 2011 4:16 pm
As the holiday and winter heating season approaches, the Cedar Rapids Fire Department has traditionally seen an increase in the number of fires caused by electrical failures due to overloaded extension cords or power strips.
The Fire Department recommends that all appliances be plugged directly into an outlet suitable for the required amperage of the appliance. This would include heat-producing appliances such as space heaters, as well as appliances with compressors such as refrigerators, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers.
It is recommended that any equipment with a motor drive be plugged directly into a wall outlet.
Extension cords and power strips need to be approved by an independent testing laboratory, such as the Underwriters Laboratory. There will be a label attached to the extension cord or power strip that bears the mark of the testing lab.
Power strips should have an internal circuit breaker that will trip if the power strip is overloaded or shorted to prevent overheating.
