Republicans rush to remove ACORN threat
The Gazette Opinion Staff

I strongly disagree with your Sept. 20 editorial “ACORN must be held accountable.” Are the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now employees caught on tape representative of the entire organization? Has anyone come up with evidence that ACORN supported and encouraged fraudulent actions? Shouldn't Congress find answers to such questions before taking drastic action against an organization that helps the less fortunate among us? Why the rush?
The same members of Congress who rushed to cut off ACORN funding have not been as responsive in the past when defense contractors such as Blackwater were found to have engaged in wrongdoing.
ACORN has long been a boogeyman of the right-wingers because it works to help poor people. It has helped hundreds of thousands of minority voters register to vote and get to the polls in recent years. As we've seen, Republicans have a specific agenda: If something poses a threat, they take it out.
