Goettl gets big upset

Dec. 29, 2011 6:32 pm
EVANSTON, Ill. - Iowa State red-shirt freshman Luke Goettl produced one of the top upsets Thursday during the opening session of the Midlands Championships at Welsh-Ryan Arena. The Cyclones 141-pounder dropped Penn's second-ranked returning All-American Zack Kemmerer (eighth in 2010), 5-3, to advance to last night's quarterfinals.
Goettle led throughout the match and scored a takedown in the final minute to seal the victory.
“I don't think he really knew how good the kid was or what the guy's credentials were,” Iowa State Coach Kevin Jackson said. “He went out there and tried to wrestle as hard as he could.”
Jackson said Goettl still could have wrestled better, maintaining his offensive attack late. The Arizona native might be scratching the surface of his potential with the win. Jackson said he could be an All-American this year.
“I don't think Luke has wrestled to his full potential, yet,” Jackson said. “I think he's capable of more than what he showed out there. It definitely was a big win for him and us.”
