Shirley A. Engle, 86, of Marion, passed away May 25, 2021, at St. Luke's Hospice in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A public visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 28, at Cedar Memorial Chapel of Memories with services following at 11 a.m.
Surviving Shirley are her husband, Wayne; son, Dan (Janet) Engle of Marion; daughter, Sue Engle of Marion; daughter-in-law, Maureen Engle of Cedar Rapids; and daughter-in-law, Lisa Engle of Marion. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Melissa Barnhill of Cedar Rapids, Luke (Gabriela) Engle of Fort Myers, Fla., Ben Engle of Marion, DJ (Katie) Engle of Marion, Kristen (Ted) McNichol of Urbandale, Lindsay Engle of Marion, Mallory (Hasan) Utebay of Des Moines, Sarah Engle of Marion, Jesse Davis of Cedar Rapids, Rachael (Austin) Sneed of Palo and Craig Engle (Elena Davidson) of Denver, Colo.; sister-in-law, Phyllis Mahoney of Chesterton, Ohio; along with many nieces and nephews.
Also surviving are Shirley’s great-grandchildren, Olivia Engle, Brookelyn Barnhill, Stella Barnhill, David Engle, Max McNichol, Marley McNichol, Taylor Engle, Mavi Utebay, Drayson Engle, Steele Engle, Shay Engle and Huxley Sneed.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Norma Larsen; brother-in-law, Dick "Swede" Larsen; brother-in-law, Don Mahoney; son, Dave Engle; and son, Doug Engle.
Shirley was born Dec. 28, 1934, in Ottumwa, Iowa, to Norman and Venetta Johnson. She attended Ottumwa High School, where she met Wayne Engle on the school bus and courtship began. Shirley and Wayne moved to Air Force bases in Alaska, Minnesota and Tennessee during Wayne's enlistment. Afterward, they moved to Cedar Rapids to start their family and business. E&S Electric (now the ESCO Group) was started in Shirley and Wayne's basement, where Shirley handled radio dispatches and bookkeeping while she raised four children. Shirley continued to work in the business until she started Fashion Corner/Kid's Stuff clothing shops in Marion.
Wayne and Shirley would have celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in June. Shirley loved to golf, read and to play cards with friends. She was a member of Antioch Christion Church, Indian Creek Country Club, OOP in Marion, Friends of the Marion Library, and a volunteer for Linnhaven and the American Cancer Society. She also enjoyed teaching Sunday school and leading youth groups at Marion Christian Church.
