By Carol Stiers: At the time, we were living in Mesa, Arizona. It was breakfast time and my husband was at the table and I was at the kitchen sink when the second plane hit the towers. It was a very long day. I was working at a Scottsdale Mall. They finally decided to let everyone go home at 3:00pm. By that time, most things were quiet. The planes had been grounded. At night the only plane to fly was a fighter jet patrolling the skies. It was an eerie feeling.
For days afterwards, most residents were glued to their television sets. They seemed unable to cope with the situation. My son, in Iowa City, said that most people around that area were able to go on with their lives. Things were getting back to normal in Iowa. So, there really is something when people talk about "midwestern stock." We really are able to cope and go on with our lives.
